HIV AIDS awareness programme at Manthuvil Jaffna

14 June 2008 - Sri Lanka remains one of the few countries in the region with a low-level in AIDS cases, with less than 0.1% of the population being affected by the virus. In the hope of creating awareness to eradicating and preventing the spread of this disease, ADT continues to reach out to many people across the country by working closely with the community through local Churches, government agencies and community leaders. In keeping with this objective an awareness programme was organized especially for the youth in Manthuvil village Jaffna.

Manthuvil village falls under a ‘high security zone village’. The community consist of about 684 families. They live in fear, depression, and poverty. Further they are deprived of the simple basics of life. The children have to walk over 30 km to school as there’s no mode of transportation. As a result very few children attend school and, instead loiter in the village which leads them to become vulnerable victims of anti social activities, liquor and drug addicts.

In order to create a healthy society and build good social values in the village of Manthuvil an AIDS awareness programme was held on the 19th of May 2008 at the Manthuvil R.C. school hall for all the youth in Manthuvil. Altogether 102 youth in the age group of 16 – 30 participated from the village.

The day’s proceedings started with the session on water and sanitation followed by talks on HIV/AIDS awareness, liquor/drugs prevention awareness, and employment resources. All the sessions were conducted by experienced trainers. The topics were comprehensive and simply explained and were understood by all the participants. S Kamalraj who attended the seminar mentioned that this programme gave him a good knowledge and understanding on HIV/AIDS and that it will help him to safeguard his family by sharing with them the advice he learnt at the programme.

We know that this programme created a big impact and was a great success as many participants commented that they greatly benefited from what they learnt at the programme. “We never knew the gravity of this epidemic, but after this programme we understand how we should face a situation like this in order to save our selves and others” said Suganthan.

ADT is committed to conducting more awareness programmes throughout the country in order to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic in Sri Lanka.
