More than two decades of ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka have left over 70,000 dead, 1.3 million internally displaced, 40,000 widowed and 312,000 children affected by the war, of which over 12,000 are child soldiers.
In 2002, the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) agreed to a ceasefire and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). However, this was short lived and both parties started an ‘undeclared’ war in 2005.
Youth and children suffer the most - their education is hindered and their health and physical safety are at risk.  It is our responsibility to do whatever we can to establish peace and understanding between the Sinhala and Tamil communities.
