Peace  awareness  programme  in  Vavuniya  in  order  to  celebrate  the  International  peace  day

Introduction

Although ADT  planned  to  celebrate  “International  peace  day”  on  a  grand scale in  Vavuniya  due to the country  situation  prevailing  war and  the  tightening  of  the  security,  it was decided  to  celebrate  the  event  in a low profile. We along  with  the  Ceylon  Transport Board  and  the  municipal  council  of  Vavuniya  district conducted a Peace awareness programme.   We  chose  the  Vavuniya main  bus  halt  as  the  venue to conduct  this  programme.

On  the  21st  of  November  2007  we  painted  the  bus  halt  and  peace  slogans such  as  “War  destroys,  Peace  rebuilds”  and  “Our  responsibility  is  to  create peace  which  brings  a  joyful  life”  were  painted  on  the  bus  halts.  Our  objective behind  this  project  was  to  bring  all  nationalities  together  leaving  aside  all political,  religious  and  cultural  differences.

Slogans used  for  the  project

“War destroys,  Peace  rebuilds”
“Our  responsibility  is  to  create  peace  which  brings  a  joyful  life”.

An  overview  of  the  area  which  was  selected  for  this  project

For  the  past  20  years  Sri  Lanka  has  been  facing  immense  struggles  due  to  the ongoing  ethnic  conflict.  Vavuniya is the necessary transit point for land route travelers,  especially  for  the   Tamils who reside in the North.  This  district  has  faced  lot  of problems  due  to  military  activity  in  the  region.

Overview of people who helped to  do  this  project

The  Ceylon  Transport  Board,  the  Municipal  Council  of  the Vavuniya  district  and  the  District  Police  Office  helped  us  immensely  in this project.  The event ended successfully  because  this  programme  was  done  at  the  needed  time  and  at  the  appropriate   place.

Significance of the project

More  than  7000  Sinhala,  Tamil  and  Muslim  people  use this  bus  halt   every  day.  Therefore  conducting   this  project  in  such  a  central  travel  zone could help reach many and  many  towards peaceful coexistence.

Success  Stories

My  name  is  Sagunthaladevi  and  I’m  a  resident  of  Vavuniya  – Kurumankaadu area.  For  the  last  20  years  I  have  been  involved  in  various  social  activities.  I like  facing  challenges  and  getting  involved  in  social  activities.  The  programme you  organized  is  a  great  moral support   to  people  like  me  who  are  involved  in social  work.  The  war  has  claimed   many lives  in our  area,  so  the  slogans  such as  “War destroys,  Peace  rebuilds”  which  you   have  used  for  this  awareness programme  will  definitely attract  well  wishers  of  this   nation  towards  peace.

Thank  you  –  well  wisher

My  name  is Nishamini  and  I  am  in  grade  11.  From  my  childhood  I  have  been living  with  my  parents  in  a  Sinhalese  village  called  ‘Moondru  Murippu’.  We  live  together  without  any  ethnic   problems.  The  peace  building  slogans  which  you have  used  for  this  programme  has  brought about  awareness  amongst  the students  about living  peaceful  lives  without  any  religious,  language  or  ethnic problems.  These  kinds  of  projects  in  Vavuniya  will  help  build  bridge the ethnic divide and move towards  peace.

Thank  you  -  Student.
